Meet The Coaches

All of the coaches for the Toro Bike Team are volunteers that selflessly volunteer their time to work with our team. All coaches are required to undergo background checks and complete additional training through the NICA in order to mitigate safety risks and an equitable environment for all levels of riders at our practices.

Jay Larson

Jay Larson has been biking ever since he can remember.  He grew up in Northern Utah with trails literally in his backyard.  As an Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster for over 20 years, Jay grew up outdoors hunting, hiking, fishing, skiing, and mountain biking. He especially loved exploring mountain trails on his bike as it let him explore larger areas faster.

In 2004 Jay brought his wife and small family to Arizona for medical school and quickly realized that being able to mountain bike year-round was amazing.  He fell in love with the desert and is often accused of stopping too often to take pictures of the Arizona landscape.

Two years ago Jay started the Mountain View High School Bike Team in hopes to share his love of mountain biking with the youth, including his son who is a Junior this year.  He has been a coach and sponsor of multiple teams over the past 3 years and has seen the positive impact the sport has had on kids and families. He is very excited to see those changes in Mountain View Bike team students this year.

Dustin Doyle

Dustin Doyle is 6' 9" so you would think he would play basketball but he prefers shredding the trails!

Scott Ferrin.jpg

Scott Ferrin

Scott has been a recreational mountain bike rider for many years. He grew up riding in the mountains of Utah. His son is a Sophomore on the team and that got him involved with coaching for the MVT Team. In Scott's words, "I am really excited to be the team sweep because no one is slower than me". His motto is "no one left behind!". This is Scott's second year as a coach.

Dave Frazier

My name is Dave Frazier. I became interested in Mountain Biking about 6 years ago when my son started riding for a local team here in the valley. He loved the sport so much that I started riding as well to support him. I grew to love Mountain Biking as much as he did. It’s so great to see these kids enjoying the outdoors, doing something healthy, and competing as a team. I decided to help coach to support this awesome sport and to grow Mountain Biking by helping to get more kids involved.

Steve Adams

Steve has been riding since high school with an occasional race thrown in to remind him how fast everybody else is!  Steve really loves to sweep team rides and help kids get back on the trail with tools, a pump, water or just some encouraging words!  His first job in high school (and all through college) was Landis Cyclery learning bike maintenance from the best.  He was born and raised in AZ, and went to college at Fort Lewis in Durango and ASU.

Robert Boyle

Rob grew up in Utah but has lived in AZ and AK for the last 20 years. He has family throughout the country riding with NICA and is stoked to see those NICA good vibes he has heard about in other states happen here in AZ for his 5 daughters. He has led youth groups and coached most of his adult life.

Rob has been mountain biking since 1990 and is happy to see his kids now riding. He has competed in several races but mostly just loves to ride to be outdoors. Rob loves to hunt, fish and backpack as well. He loves how mountain biking is so much more reliably fun than waiting for a fish to bite, an elk to be where he hoped, snow to fall or for a wave to cooperate and be surfed.

Matt Lofgran.jpg

Matt Lofgran

Matt is an Arizona native, and a Mountain View alum. His father got him into road biking where he started racing competitively at the age of 13 and his first job in a local bike store at 15 years of age. Now his work takes him abroad, and when he’s lucky, he likes to sneak in some riding or soccer with the locals. When he’s home with his wife and daughter Matt likes to help new people who are taking up the sport, and especially enjoys coaching the kids and seeing their progress.

Adam Anderson

Adam started cycling in law school—his celebratory graduation ride included an endo off a pedestrian bridge in East Harlem with his oldest strapped into the baby seat on back. (Don't grab the front brake going downhill if your front wheel is the only wheel touching the ground.) And he's proud to have been one of the first to mountain bike the brand new single track in Inwood Hill Park, the only place in Manhattan you can shred. He's proud to be in his second year coaching with this team and to have his two youngest sons riding.

*If you love mountain biking and would like to volunteer as a coach, we would love to have you! You don't need to be able to be there every practice, even just once a week. There is a background check and you need to do coach training.
